How to measure Pokémon card centering (and the mistake that ruins the number)
Centering is the one part of a card's grade you can settle for free, before you spend anything on a submission. It is also the part people most often measure wrongly — not because the arithmetic is hard, but because of a photography problem that quietly moves the answer by several percent.
Both halves are below: the formula, and the trap.
The formula
Measure the two opposing borders — the white margin between the outer edge of the card and the edge of the printed art frame — then express each as a share of the pair:
side % = side ÷ (side + opposite side) × 100
A worked example. Say the left border measures 2.6 mm and the right border 3.4 mm:
- left = 2.6 ÷ (2.6 + 3.4) × 100 = 43.3%
- right = 3.4 ÷ 6.0 × 100 = 56.7%
That card is 56.7/43.3 horizontally. Note what the formula does not need: the width of the card. Only the two borders matter, which is why the measurement works just as well on a photo as on the physical card — as long as the photo is honest, and that is the whole problem below.
Quote the worst side
Centering is always quoted worst-side-first. "60/40" is shorthand for neither side takes more than 60% of the pair, so the 56.7/43.3 card above passes a 60/40 bar and fails a 55/45 one.
You have two axes to measure — left/right and top/bottom — and the worse of the two is the one that decides the grade. A card that is 51/49 horizontally and 64/36 vertically is a 64/36 card. There is no averaging. The tightest axis gets no credit for the loose one.
The mistake: you are probably measuring your camera
Here is what ruins most measurements taken from a photo.
If the camera is not perfectly square to the card — tilted a few degrees, or held slightly off to one side — the card renders as a trapezium rather than a rectangle. The edge nearer the lens is magnified and the far edge is shrunk. The borders on the near side measure wider, and the ones on the far side measure narrower, entirely because of where you were standing. A dead-centre 50/50 card can photograph as a 56/44 card at a tilt you would not notice by eye.
This is not a rounding error. It is usually the largest single source of error in a hand measurement, and it is systematic — it always pushes in the direction of your tilt, so repeating the measurement does not average it out.
There are two ways to deal with it:
- Prevent it — get the camera genuinely parallel to the card, not approximately. A level indicator in degrees helps far more than eyeballing it, because the tilt that matters is smaller than the tilt you can see.
- Correct it — detect the four corners of the card and rectify the image, mapping that trapezium back to a true rectangle before measuring anything. Why small placement errors move the number so much
Border widths are a much smaller share of a card than people intuitively expect. Measuring across our own reference set, the border is roughly:
- 2.5% of the card's dimension on vintage cards
- 3.8% on modern English cards
- 3.7% on modern Japanese cards
So on a modern card, each border is about a thirtieth of the card's width. Place your guide one-tenth of a border-width off — a slip you would struggle to see — and you have moved that border by 10%, and the ratio by a few points. That is the difference between a card that clears 55/45 and one that does not.
The practical consequence: zoom in. Place the guide against a border you can actually see rather than one you are estimating from a full-card view. Measuring is free, so take two passes and compare — if they disagree by more than a point, one of them was placed carelessly.
Do you need to measure the back?
Usually not. PSA's reverse centering tolerance is 90/10 for every grade from 9 down to 1.5, which a card has to be dramatically miscut to fail. The back only becomes failable at the very top, where the tolerance for a 10 is 75/25.
So the efficient rule is: measure the front. Only measure the back if the front came in at 55/45 or better. If the front cannot reach a 10, the back cannot cost you one.
Can you do it with a ruler?
You can, and for a rough sanity check it is fine — a millimetre rule against the physical card avoids the perspective problem entirely, which is a real advantage. The limitation is resolution. On a modern card, borders are around 2 mm wide, so reading them to the nearest half-millimetre gets you the ratio to within roughly 10 points, which is enough to tell a 50/50 card from an 80/20 one and nowhere near enough to tell a 55/45 from a 60/40. Since that is exactly the distinction that decides a 10, the ruler runs out of precision at the only place it mattered.

How to measure Pokémon card centering
Measure the front centering of a Pokémon card accurately from a photograph, without the camera angle corrupting the result.

Get the card flat and evenly lit
Lay the card on a flat surface with the whole card in frame. Light it evenly and avoid glare — a sleeve or toploader reflection sitting over a border makes that border impossible to place a guide against. Take the card out of the sleeve if you can.

Get the camera square to the card
Hold the phone parallel to the card, not merely pointed at it. A few degrees of tilt magnifies the near border and shrinks the far one, which shifts the measurement by several percent in the direction of the tilt. Use a level indicator in degrees rather than judging it by eye — the tilt that matters is smaller than the tilt you can see.

Correct the image for perspective before measuring
Find the four corners of the card and rectify the image so the card is a true rectangle, then crop to that corrected outline. Skipping this step means every later measurement inherits the camera angle. Cardient does this automatically at capture.

Place the guides on the inner art frame
Set a guide on each of the four inner edges of the printed frame, where the border meets the art. Zoom in to place each one — borders are only about 3% of the card, so a slip you cannot see at full-card view is a large fraction of a border. A loupe or magnifier makes this considerably more repeatable.

Work out each axis as a ratio
For each axis, divide one border by the sum of both and multiply by 100: side ÷ (side + opposite) × 100. Do this for left/right and again for top/bottom. Quote the worse side of each pair, so a 2.6 mm and 3.4 mm pair reads 56.7/43.3.

Take the worse axis as the result
The axis with the worse worst-side is the one that limits the grade — there is no averaging between them. Compare that single number against PSA’s published front tolerance for the grade you are aiming at: 55/45 for a 10, 60/40 for a 9, 65/35 for an 8.

Only measure the back if the front cleared 55/45
PSA allows 90/10 on the reverse for every grade from 9 downward, so the back is effectively unfailable below the top. It is only worth measuring when the front is good enough for a 10, where the reverse tolerance tightens to 75/25.
Common questions
What is a good centering percentage for a Pokémon card?
50/50 is a perfect cut. In practical terms, 55/45 or better on the front clears PSA’s published tolerance for a Gem Mint 10; 60/40 clears a 9 and is inside the 5% eye-appeal band for a 10, so a 10 is possible but at the grader’s discretion; 65/35 clears an 8 and 70/30 clears a 7. Because the worse of the two axes is what counts, a card is only as well centred as its weakest axis.
Is 60/40 centering good?
It is good enough for a PSA 9 outright, and it sits exactly on the edge of a 10. PSA’s published front tolerance for a 10 is 55/45 plus 5% of eye-appeal leeway, which puts a 60/40 card at the very top of that band — reachable, but decided by the grader rather than guaranteed by the number. Anything worse than 60/40 on the front cannot be a 10.
Does the back of the card count towards centering?
It counts, but it almost never decides anything. PSA’s reverse tolerance is 90/10 for every grade from 9 down to 1.5, which a card has to be severely miscut to fail. The exception is the Gem Mint 10, where the reverse tolerance tightens to 75/25. That makes the back worth measuring only when the front has already cleared 55/45.
Can I measure card centering with a ruler?
Yes, and it neatly sidesteps the camera-angle problem, but it runs out of precision where it matters. Modern card borders are around 2 mm wide, so reading to the nearest half-millimetre puts your ratio within roughly 10 points — plenty to spot a badly miscut card, and not nearly enough to separate a 55/45 from a 60/40. That separation is the one that decides a 10.
Why does my measurement differ from the one I did before?
Almost always one of two things. Either the camera was not square to the card, which magnifies the near border and shrinks the far one and pushes the result several points in the direction of the tilt; or a guide was placed from a full-card view rather than zoomed in, and since a border is only about 3% of the card, a small placement slip is a large share of that border. Measure twice with the card properly square and zoom in to place the guides.
